Obama's Exit Strategy
It's essentially the same thing as a parent telling their kid it's time to start handling their own shit, but in this case its one state letting another state become autonomous again. Democratic Afghanistan as we know has been essentially a protectorate or ward state of the US since we invaded in 2001. It was frighteningly easy to remove the Taliban since it was mainly a few special forces groups and local Afghans who managed to oust them, but maintaining the peace has been the same problem. It's not the same case as in Iraq where violence was exacerbated by religious division, its just the pervasive disdain for American culture and forces which continue to hamper our efforts to, "Win Their Hearts And Minds." In layman's terms, The people of Afghanistan hate us more than the Taliban but their still not strong enough to resist them coming back into power once we leave.
Sadly for them they don't have the same position of Iraq, since Iraq was America's war of choice we were obliged to stay until things were as stable as possible. Since Afghanistan was a war of defense against the Taliban regime we have no such obligation to see a smooth transition since we've generally accomplished our goal of dismantling Al-Qaeda in the country. We no longer need nor can afford regime building in Afghanistan, so with election year coming up Obama's taking the opportunity to exit now, and its time for the Afghans to get their shit together if they want to keep the peace they've gained from the Taliban.
Obama's exit strategy isn't necessarily the nicest or the most responsible, but it is the most realistic response to a situation that seems to only be rapidly deteriorating. We'll save our economy but we may doom their country should they not rise to the occasion to govern and defend themselves.
